Inaugural Institutional Registry Completed: The Academy Confirms Legal Standing as a Global Scientific Organization

Following the adoption of its International Nonprofit Scientific Charter earlier this year, The Academy — formally known as The Americas Academy of Sciences — confirms the completion of its inaugural institutional registry, thereby establishing its full legal standing as an international, nonprofit scientific organization.

This milestone represents a decisive step in the Academy’s transition from foundational conception to operational reality. With the registry process now concluded, the Academy is formally constituted as an independent, non-governmental, and non-commercial scientific body, empowered to carry out its mission of advancing scholarly excellence, fostering transnational cooperation, and strengthening the institutional foundations of science across the Americas.

The completion of the registry affirms the Academy’s capacity to operate under a unified legal framework while preserving its core principle of academic autonomy. It enables the formal activation of governance mechanisms outlined in the Charter and Governance Framework, including the Permanent Scientific Council, disciplinary Sections, and internal review structures, and provides the legal basis for the Academy’s Fellowship system, publications, and programmatic activities.

“The conclusion of our institutional registration marks a pivotal moment in the Academy’s development,” the Academy stated in its official communiqué. “It provides the structural continuity necessary for sustained scholarly collaboration and confirms our standing as a permanent scientific institution serving the international research community.”

With its legal status now secured, the Academy will proceed with the implementation of its transitional operational agenda. This includes the establishment of standing scientific committees, the initiation of archival and knowledge management systems, and the preparation of its inaugural Fellowship nomination cycle. Concurrently, work will advance on internal policies governing peer review, research integrity, and interdisciplinary coordination.

The registry also authorizes the Academy to expand its academic functions, encompassing the convening of scientific assemblies, the development of publication platforms, and the launch of programs dedicated to supporting early-career researchers. These activities collectively reflect the Academy’s long-term commitment to building an enduring scholarly ecosystem grounded in merit, rigor, and international cooperation.

This achievement underscores the Academy’s foundational vision: to serve as a shared institutional home for scientists across disciplines and borders, and to promote the role of science as a unifying force in addressing complex global challenges.
